The Kite Runner

Now that we have finished reading the novel, what did you guys think? What is most notable about Hosseini's writing?

  1. The way Hosseini incorporated flashback into the story is what impressed me the most about his writing.
Specially during the alley scene, the anecdote of the sacrificial lamb makes the event more sentimental and real.
The look of the lamb, comparing that submissive look to Hassan and the sacrifice that Hassan had made brilliant!-there are also other meaningful examples of flashback but the imagery of the lamb was impressive.

  2. I'd say the use of memory recollection in general, flashback or otherwise, is used brilliantly. If it weren't for such vivid descriptions (such as the look in the lamb's eyes) in these memories, the story would have lost so much of its essence.

  3. I love Hosseini's descriptions in general! Especially at the beginning of a new scene, he never fails to make the reader feel like he or she if physically present in the first paragraph! he masterfully sets the mood of what is to happen; ultimately, making it an intimate and emotional read.

  5. I would say the most memorable thing about his writing is the manner in which he employs himself, his own ambivalences, his own doubts and questions into his novel. There are huge themes that are brought up in the novel, and along with those themes there is a sense of question. It is most notable in the beginning of the story, with the question of "There are ways to be good again." One sees the reluctance, or disbelief, in the thought that one could be good again after such cruelty. And as the story progresses, the reader, Amir and the author himself becomes more and more certain that there are indeed ways to be good again.

I can just picture him sitting there, writing his novel and reflecting upon his own life- his own beliefs, his questions on life, and his worries. I have always wondered if authors should write for the reader, or write for themselves. With this novel, I believe vehemently that it was a form of catharsis for him. Though I have no proof, I think that a lot of that story was Hosseini's own narrative; the wanting to become a writer, the disconnection with the father figure, the guilt of a tragedy, IT IS ALL REAL LIFE! Thus, I have concluded that the best writing is the one that authors write for themselves, because then they are truly able to explore the inner depths of their abilities and expose their beliefs in a sincere and unmistakable manner. In is similar when one thinks to oneself, one does not hold back anything because we know that no one can hear us. In like fashion, the author that writes for himself/herself is writing with no external set backs!

    I love it!

  6. I like the how he shows the reader what happened instead of telling the reader what happened. I think what I described it has be ambiguously specific. The ending was fantastic and emotional. The bigining-mysterious and confusing. The flashbacks vivid and sensual. The bood is excellently written.

  7. What I liked was the fact that Khaled Hosseini kept the reader wondering why the characters acted like they did and how he showed the cultural conflict between the characters. In the begining of the book (from my point of view)Hosseini makes the reader feel that like you understands the character and his motives. But through out the book the reader begins to question how can Amir do what he did, and thus the reader doesn't understand anymore, but he/she still has the same emotional feelings as the characer does.
Hosseini did (in my belief)a good job in making the afghan cultural seem a bit related to other culturals (like the mexican cultural) Because the afghan people are united and dispite their little differences they get along. Like the Mexican people, if you are mexican, even if you have been Americanized abite you still feel accepted in their own type of ethnic group.

  8. Hosseini writing had very good discriptions with the background imagery when he was alluding to the main situation itself. It helped the reader see the tone and mood of the story about to change to good or bad.
