Happiness or Truth?
It seems as if happiness and truth cannot work hand in hand in the lives of the people in Brave New World. People do everything that they can to avoid facing the truth about their own situations or realize that they're living without purpose The common use of Soma reveals the universal agreement of the wanting of delusion and the absence of critical thinking. The people lie to themselves and think that drugs and sex will make them happy. However, it is making them empty and they are left addicted and unsatisfied. Is it possible in our society to find happiness and truth together? Are we able to make them compatible or would we have to live with one and without the other?

I find this question to be a matter of opinion, and philosophical logic. My philosophy , is that happiness is only achieved when you are not afraid of the truth. When whatever truth people fear, like death being painful or love being unbearable, is accepted as a part of life and not the end of it. So yes, truth and happiness are absolutely compatible.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Stefany. My philosophical point of view is that we do what make us happy not what others tell us to do because it make them happy. So I don't believe that the two worlds can be joined together. we hear what we want to hear because it is in our nature to want to protect ourselves emotionally and physically.
ReplyDeleteLifes what you make of it. You will be happy if you want to be happy and you will be bitter if you want to be bitter. No one forces you to do anything and no one can force you to do anything. It's more than possible to know the truth and be happy and to not know the truth and try to be happy.
ReplyDeleteAlso, when you stated that there are people who find refuge in sex and drugs yet are still unhappy with their lives, I feel like people today think that those will help. It's a mindset that is still around today. Little do they know that if anything it only makes things worse.
I feel like this has more to do with your definition of happiness? In my opinion, the citizens of Brave New world who drown out reality with drugs and sex do in fact find a temporary, albeit fleeting happiness. I'm not saying that a drug induced moment of joy is the best choice, but they do have that undeniable moment of peace and happiness. I suppose it all depends on your own definition of happiness. Moments of joy? Or complete personal fulfillment?
ReplyDeleteDoes feeling happy mean that you are happy? I wonder if it is happiness if it is induced by a drug?
ReplyDeleteAlso, if someone says they are not happy, is that such an awful thing? Why do we feel it's important that everyone is happy? Isn't this like Brave New World?
ReplyDeleteWhen reading the quote, I thought of our society and what we tend to overlook. The first thing I thought of was technology. We are aware that technology decreases our social skills yet many of us overlook and even lie to ourselves that it doesn't and continue to use technology. Our phones are our guilty pleasure...with addictive qualities.
