"The greater a man's talents, the greater his power to lead astray. It is better that one should suffer than that many should be corrupted...Murder kills only the individual, and after all, what is an individual?"
This quote just shows how human life means nothing in this society. One life is nothing to them because they can make so many more lives. It's shocking how desensitized they are to death. Also how a man's power can corrupt their system. Much like how in this society, being different is looked down upon because they are affecting the stability. What do you guys think of this quote? Can you see any similarities from this society and ours?

I think that we can relate this passage to our everyday lives. Food. We take food for granted. We throw away leftovers, complain about the type of food we receive, etc while there are people who have no food. We think that it doesn't mater because we will keep producing it.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why manufacturing is looked at as progress. Why is it progress? Just because it's faster and similar, it doesn't mean it's effective.
I think that if you're different, you stand out; you have power because people will notice you and your actions. If your different you set yourself apart from society in general. You don't conform to social norms, you have the ability to make an impact in your society. A leader is usually one who stands out, one who is willing to push forward despite obstacles they've faced.
I really loved this passage I'm so glad your brought it up ! The reason why I think people look down upon those who are different is because they are scared that this person will change our normality.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see the similarities though for example water. Many people , even me, take it for granted. We take showers that are up to 20 minutes long and it's fine because it's not like it'll ever run out, right ? Well we're wrong. We know it will run out but since we don't think it'll affect us we keep on going wasting water. We have to start seeing what's truly out there. That we are losing the resource and that many countries don't even have it. Or if they do it's heavily infected.
I really like how you used the example of water, I never thought of it in that way.
DeleteHere's a fun fact, the state of California is currently going through a drought so any time a person takes a shower, they cant take their sweet precious time any more. Now, if you go over your water use, your bill will be heavily charged.
DeleteNot only do people take resources for granted, but also humans as well. For example, borrowing money and not paying back. You might have that one friend who just always carries cash with them and one day when you have no money so you borrow some. You borrow more money again even though you still hasn't paid your friend back from the first time and the chain continues . Would you think that person was only your friend because of your money? Taking advantage of someone is unfair. You don't realize what you have until its gone.
I really love th fact that you used an exampl such as water, But were always taking it for granted. But this passage, I feel like it could reveal a little bit more or it has a bigger meaning to it.
DeleteThanks guys! Briana that is a very interesting fact you brought up. I didn't know about this but I do believe this law will benefit the water source a great amount. Also your comparison is really good. We do take people for granted in a daily basis and most of the time we don't even realize it.
DeleteI think the reason to dislike others who are different from you might be a combination of fear, insecurity, and the need to blame.
ReplyDeleteTotally agreed, however i think its also a fear of being less than someone. Or never good enough kind of thing.

DeleteI think both examples Lupita and Julia gave were excellent. It just makes us realize how careless we are, even without knowing it.
ReplyDeleteI really like the quote that you used Amanda! You're so right, nowadays we look bad upon anything that we feel is not the same as us. For some reason, we feel the need like everyone has to be like us or the other way around. Why can't we just be content with who we are and worry more about our self's than others. I don't want it to sound like a bad thing to worry more about our self's but once we figure out who we truly are then we can see just how different everyone else is from us. We don't have to see different as a bad thing but a good one too. We are not all the same and that Okay! It reminds me of the short story " The Pedestrian", in which everyone is almost hypnotized by technology once a man decides to go on a walk and enjoy nature, he is classified as being crazy for not following everyone else.

ReplyDeleteYeah, the extremity of this society destroys the value of the individual. All these individuals are engineered to support and care for the well being of society, not themselves. In the end, they know they're only supporters of the great Society.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daisy. This reminds me of Anthem, actually. They resemble one another in the way that we are all the cogs that comprise the machine of "society". The more people accept this, the easier it is for them to function in a way that is comfortable to them. However, being a unique individual in this kind of society will automatically produce chaos. To avoid this chaos, I can understand the thought process of this society, wanting to not rock the boat, and weeding out any threats to the parameters of their society.
