The Witches

 Act I Scene i

FIRST WITCH: When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain?

SECOND WITCH: When the hurly-burly’s done, When the battle’s lost and won.

THIRD WITCH: That will be ere the set of sun.

FIRST WITCH: Where the place?

SECOND WITCH: Upon the heath.

THIRD WITCH: There to meet with Macbeth.

We read in Act I that it was the witches who spoke a prophecy to Banquo and Macbeth about the heir of the throne. Prophecy and supernatural affairs always seem to spark an interest in the minds of humans. It could be interpreted that the prophecy from the witches is what planted the seed of ambition in Macbeth, or may have even watered it. We debated in class about who was to blame for the murder, but we never mentioned the witches. Should they be blamed for putting the idea of being king in Macbeth's head? Would Macbeth even consider killing Duncan if he never heard of this prophecy? Also, do you guys think that the play resembles "Game of Thrones?"

  1. Zion, what a great question about the culpability of the witches! I also think you should speak to Mrs. Powell about any correlations with Game of Thrones, since she is very familiar with Macbeth and this current series. Report what she says here...

  2. I don't know if I were to do so much as to blame them. The ambition had to have already been there for it to have meant anything to Macbeth. I do not watch game of thrones so i cant make that connection.(soz)

  3. Wow! I never even thought of this ! I can so see where you are coming from . I mean the witches sort of did spark Macbeth into thinking he should be king however they didn't tell him to kill the king. They also never really said how he would become king so for all we know the catch of becoming the king was to kill Duncan.

  5. I see where you are coming from, but I personally don't blame the witches for Macbeth's killing. Although they did tell him that he would become king, they never told him how so it's not like they encouraged him to do his sin. He did it to himself. And like Clarissa, could you explain further?

  6. Cynthia Magana,
I don't think the witches did that much influence as they only stated he'd get the throne. He just HOPED it'd be without any harm. Many things came into play to spark Macbeth thoughts to kill to get to the throne; although, I necessary wouldn't directly blame the witches.

  7. I do believe it could be the witches fault. Yes, they were not the ones who did it but they some what influenced it.
