How do you guys feel about Bernard in Brave New World? His character is obviously different from the others. But why if everyone is conditioned and alpha-plus even more so then why is he so different? Why does he have emotions and feelings? Why does he see farther into things and realize that his whole world is conformity thus making him uncomfortable when he takes soma? What is it that happened that made him different?

Well, besides reading that he may have alcohol in his surrogate, the reason for why Bernard may have these emotions is that there always has to be someone that is the guide for his other counterparts in letting them know that there's more to what they have been conditioned to think...
ReplyDeleteAs maythe said besides the rumor we dont really know why hes different. I personally really like and admire Bernard because hes an outcast. His differences to me make him more likeable.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Bernard is simply a product of society's attempts to play God. Yes, their scientific methods are up to date and constantly improving, but they are prone to flaws. Whether or not the alcohol is the reason Bernard's physical state is below average, is a different story dealing with technical issues.
ReplyDeleteHowever, i believe he thinks differently from others because he was outcasted and rejected from his peers. When you're alone a lot, it's easy to find yourself pondering over useless ideas and questions. So it's not so farfetched to see that Bernard has come up with all these "radical" ideas.
I personally find myself relating to Bernard and cheering him on. #TeamBernard
