Poor John

The ending of Brave New World is disheartening. I was cheering for John to become the savior for the civilized world, but I knew that it would not be possible, nor realistic. However, I never thought that the ending would lead to John's suicide. Maybe it is just me but I expected more from him. I never expected him to lower himself to believe the only decision he would make is killing himself. It is because of the savage's extreme measures that led me to think about the other two characters and question whether or not Helmholtz and Bernard may have also done the same as John? What do you guys think?

  1. Bernard became so hooked on the attention and soma, i would think he couldnt bare the thought of no civilized life. He probably is so hooked on it, he could be driven to insanity.

    1. That is your opinion and thank you for sharing your thoughts; however, my thought was that Bernard realized that he was changing and Helmholtz helped him snap out of it. So I think that Bernard is not trying to fit in to society anymore by taking soma. I am thinking he is probably resisting it.

  2. i agree his death was to sudden and he did not think rationally of his actions which I thought less of him due to the fact he was the incitement of this conformed society.

  3. I think that Helmholtz was most likely better off away from society; he seemed like he was almost looking forward to it.

    1. Was he or was he being sarcastic? Or was he putting on a front? Maybe he was genuinely happy...

  4. Analyzing the situation that Bernard and Helmholtz were in and that they got sent to different places, i think that's what they were destined to end up at. All three of them couldn't out do the civilized world.

    1. So do you think Helmholtz and Bernard still lived? Or do you think they took the same way out of the world like John?

    2. Well, i think they still lived because even though they also felt like John, they had more knowledge as to how to manage the situation they were in.

  5. I was pretty shocked to see that John killed himself. It personally did not resignate with me well. I had high hopes for him and I thought that, even though his last few days were difficult that he could've easily moved to a different location or have found a way to go to Iceland. Him giving up so easily put a huge damper on things and killed all hopes for the Brave New World.

I feel that Bernard is definitely going to lose himself into insanity as his somma addiction increases, but I fear that Hemholtz might find himself facing the same fate. He's constantly questioning the way society is run, but his conditioning is constantly blocking him from progressing. I believe that this ongoing inner conflict will drive his to insanity as well.
