Adaptations

Rarely do I care for film-type adaptations of literature, but specifically in the live-action department. I adore most cartoon adaptations.

I did some digging and found a really cute Mickey Mouse short on the book I'm reading The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain. There are some major significances in how the boys become separated and there is not much motivation to live different lives (Parent Trap like) in the book. Despite that, it is pretty funny.

My Favorite Part:

Mickey: I can't be the prince! H-how do I act? What do I say?

Prince: To govern, you'd need only say one of two things: "That's a splendid idea! I'm glad I thought of it." or "Guards! Seize him!"

It's an old joke, but I guess the actor's delivery was what made it so funny.

It turns out this other old cartoon show called Animaniacs often told segments of Shakespeare in it's actual form with translation/jokes about it on the side. Those weren't bad either.
Or the A Midsummer Night's Dream adaptation, also a Mickey Mouse short.
(I went on a cartoon spree if you have not noticed.)

What's your favorite adaptation of a piece of literature? It can be either cartoon, live-action, or even anime (Romeo X Juliet, apparently).
And don't say The Scarlet Letter with Demi Moore, or I will be very disappointed!

  1. Oh yeah definitely Demi Moore's Scarlet Letter. v.v Haha
    I'm kidding.

Off the top of my head I think the most interesting adaption I've seen so far is She's The Man, staring Amanda Bynes (prior to her very public meltdown); it's a based off of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Though a little cheesy I thought it was pretty entertaining to watch.

Also I know it's been noted several times that the Lion King is based off of Hamlet, it literally just clicked yesterday that the Lion King II: Simba's Pride (My favorite of the series) is based off of Romeo and Juliet. It should've been a no brainer, but I just noticed it. .-.

    2. Yup. I didn't realized the Lion King movies till I watch a documentary about them. The writers actually just wanted to make Simba's dad come back to Simba somehow, and they just decided "Hamlet!"

Actually, I really love the adaptation of Romeo and Juliet that we were shown in English 1. Do you remember that? ^_^

    3. I'm so glad I wasn't the only one! Which documentary was it by the way, it sounds interesting.

And I agree, I liked that adaptation a lot, I felt that the actors for Juliet and Romeo were on point and did the play justice. What's your take on the Hamlet adaptations Powell showed us?

    4. I thnk it was a special feature on the DVD. I can't tell remember if it was on the blu-ra or regular edition, though. Sorr about that.

As for the Hamlet movies, I personally don't like either too much, but I there are some pretty good things in them. I like the scenery of the Hamlet that was an albino, and the actress playing Ophelia was great.
I liked the Mel Gibson better though because the actors of Hamlet and Ophelia sold better crazy portrayals, especially Ophelia.
      And you?

    5. Aww it's okay! As for the Hamlet adaptations, I agree the Gibson-less one had some interesting cinematography and captivated my attention, but the Gibson version definitely sold me on the madness factor.
