Counter cultures are important - and in some way define a generation. The beatniks pushed for a wider acceptance of sexuality and drugs (they were more expressive), the hippies yearned for peace, the b-boys popularized urban art (such as, graffiti), punks stood up against government and were non-conformists (they stood up for individualism and equality).
I guess what I'm trying to get at, is: what counterculture in our society is going to 'define' us to other generations.
Would you agree that it's the "hipster"? I mean they go against mainstream consumerism and try to find Eco-friendly alternatives to products

ReplyDeleteThe only problem I have with calling "hipster" our counter culture is that they are mainstream. I think we are the only generation where our counter culture has been mainstream. Which is strange...However, I also believe that the LGBT community and supporters are definitely a counter culture in our generation.
ReplyDeleteYes, Hipsters are mainstream, but does that also mean they can't be countercultures? Grunge was a mainstream counterculture in the 90s.
DeleteThe LGBT community is a counter-culture today although some people go against it whether it be religious or personal beliefs.
DeleteYeah. It's mainstream to the point where there isn't real conflict between hipsters and society unlike other counter cultures were like the hippies or the misfits in the rock n roll age. If anything, hipsters are the young leaders to what society (at least in the US) actually wants (if those hipsters are environmentally conscious.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daisy A. we, as a society, don't have a conflict between a counter culture and society. At least none that we know of. Our "hipsters" don't really fight for any type of justice.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Lupita. I don't see "hipsters" making change for our society. I see change more in the "ghettos." Currently, non-wealthy people are fighting against our law enforcement. They are doing much more change than "hipsters."
DeleteI also agree with Lupe, however I also understand that it is hard to make a difference.
DeleteHipsters are in no way going against the grain of society. I think comparing hipster's to people who rebel against society is foolish because by trying so hard to be different and not mainstream, they become mainstream.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Daisy and Lupe. Although other cultures did have conflict with society, The hipsters were one of the few who didn't get into conflict.
