Dimmesdale

Hey guys, so one question I wanted to ask you is do you think it was right or wrong for Dimmesdale to keep his sin a secret. I am greatly conflicted because I don’t really know how to answer this question. I feel like Dimmesdale was wrong to keep it a secret, but then at the same time he went through so much guilt and self punishment that living became hard for him.  Do you think he deserved that as compensation for Hester’s punishment? Let me know what you guys think!

  1. I think he did deserve because he left all the guilt and burden to Hester and Pearl. Please feel free to comment!

  2. Wow, once you think about it is hard to put yoursef in his situation. In my opinion, he should have not kept it to himself.... then again he will still be punished.... I feel like he should have thought twice before committing adultery... thanks for sharing Sara!

  3. I think it was wrong for him to keep his sin a secret because he was affected greatly by his decision to hide it towards the conclusion of the novel. I believe it would've been easily handled and would've ended better for him if he would've just came out to the public thesame time Hester did. It would've been easier for him to deal with it because at the end, as we see, he had to deal with the heavy burden as he was wholly consumed by his sin. One can't hold so much guilt or sufferings inside for so long because sooner or later it has to explode. This is my opinion, however.

  4. I don't think he is wrong. If I am Dimmesdale I will do the same thing as him. Living in a Puritan community and serve as a priest, the pressure the society put on me force me not to review the truth. Moreover, Dimmesdale is a pious person he con't accept himself to do something that is against his belief, it is understandable that he refuse to speak the truth. Death itself is not scary but the time waiting for death to come is the worse torture in the world.

  5. I think that Dimmesdale, did deserve his punishment because he let the Putitan community humiliate Pearl by making her wear the Scarelt Letter. He was a burden for both Pearl and Hester.

  6. I am not sure about anyone else, but I hated Dimmesdale as person. I think that he deserved what was coming to him. He made so many promises to Hester and Pearl, and, in the end, he never really followed through with them because of death. Also, Dimmesdale was viewed in such a positive positive light by the townspeople that even if he did come out about his sin, he would not have been stigmatized as badly as Hester. His guilt and civil duties as a minister were objects of his own creation. He did not have to let them rule his decisions, but did so anyways.

  7. We can't really blame Dimmesdale for keeping secrets. He lived in a Puritan society, making him have little to no chance in gaining back acceptance of people if he were to confess his sin.

  8. I feel like he was wrong from the start because he let his loved experience mass guilt and shame without help or guidance. Sure, he did develop guilt and eventually dealt with self harm, but if he came out from the start, he could handled those feelings/thoughts with his companion by his side.
