What would have happened if Dimmesdale was the receiver of the ignominy and Hester was the one who kept silent?

I personally believe that Dimmesdale would have possibly gotten a worse sentence because of his position of power. The whole town looked up to him for guidance, just to be let down/disappointed. Gender roles might play a factor in this scenario, but since Dimmesdale was the one who was well known than he might have been subjected to more judgement and criticisms. What do you guys think?

  1. Well, let's say that Dimmesdale was the one who received the town's shame because of his sin instead of Hester. Would that really change anything? No, because at some point, the town is bound to draw conclusions about how Hester gave birth to a baby when her husband has been gone for such a long time. Dimmesdale punishment, on the other hand, might be seen as relatively the same as in the book. This is due to fact that some people may try to justify his actions as, "doing God's bidding" or reflecting the same message that we are all sinners in the end.

  3. First, this is impossible, because women give birth to child, not men. So Hester receive the shame first make more sense. If Dimmesdale is the one received the shame nothing will change, but more and greater punishment, because Dimmesdale is a priest. I think he will receive a greater punishment than Hester.

  4. I don’t think Dimmesdale would have gotten a greater punishment if he was in Hester’s position. I think that the townspeople would come to the realization that all commit sins even the most prestigious people.

  5. I believe that Hester's punishment would be worse due to how the community could jump to conclusions and blame her for making their beloved minister to sin. I believe he would of been sentenced to something that light compared to Hester's punishment.
