Question

Hello guys!

I have a question regarding reading.

Sometimes I find it hard to understand books, well right now Lolita. I was wondering if you guys have any advice for further understanding books. I wonder how you guys connect in a profound manner with literature, instead of just understanding the basics! Thanks!

  1. In this case since you have a book that deals with rape, what would help me connect is researching more about that topic. For example, how this touchy subject was solved in the past, vs. How it would be solved with today. This is just a strategy that you may use, but you most certainly do not have to if you do not want to!Please feel free to comment.

  2. In my opinion I would say to really try and understand the word choice and the specific reasons why you think he would choose those terms. Also, what I do is try and break it down into sections, and try to analyze and maybe write in the margin what the author is describing and pointing out for the readers. Those are tips that can Hopefully help you,Good luck!

  3. A good way to understand books is throw out common sense and try to delve into a deeper understanding and if you're truly stuck, it's wise to look up an analysis of the chapter as you can learn something new and different persepectives may arise.

  4. I agree with all of these comments! They have helped me in the past. If you're still struggling to understand the text break it down by maybe sentences or paragraphs to analyze the text. Also, reach out to the people that are reading the same book as you to get the opinion of others. Hope that helps!

  6. Another good way to understand a difficult book is to change perspectives. Like Jeffrey said, sometimes you have to throw common sense outside the metaphorical window. I believe that one should try to place themselves in one of the characters shoes, or reflect on a chapter through discussion. Both can greatly enhance one's understanding of a book in many different ways.

  7. To be honest, I'm not much of a reader. If I were to have a hard time understanding a book, I would either look up summaries of chapters so that someone could explain to me what happened, or I would google a character I have a hard time understanding.

  8. I have a hard time to understand English literature since it's not first language. For my I will find definitions for all the words that I don't understand, and some times I will read the book twice but in different language, it help me understand better. Also research more about that topic, I had saw many news about Lolita, since it's some how common in today. And change your perspective, and ask yourself little questions about the story after each chapters, it help you memorize some of the main points in the chapter.

  9. If I don't understand the reading I usually reread it and go over the parts I don't get with a family member or friend.
