The Jungle

During the jungle, we see Jurgis and Onya face many challenges in America. We see the effects of winter on the family and the work injury Jurgis gets. The family is barely surviving in America with all the family and a new baby. Do you think if we finished the book the story would be more graphic and melancholy or do you think the end will be a little bit hopeful like in The Grapes of Wrath?

  1. Honestly I can't really say for sure, but I feel like both books shared many similar characters, struggles, and themes, maybe the ending might be similar too.

  2. I feel like the depression would not end at chapter 12, just like in the Grapes of Wrath. I feel like the author had a lot in mind, but that's just my opinion!

  3. I believe it will get worse because we can see that as the story progressed, the situations get worse and worse overtime. In the beginning, everyone was happy from dancing and moving to America. Then towards chapter 12, we can see that the work conditions got worse, the weather is negatively affecting the family, and that Jurgis is beating his kids. Because of this, I believe that the story will have a darker ending than The Grapes of Wrath.

  4. I agree with Tommy. I think it wouldn't be a "happy" or necessarily good ending for The Jungle.

  5. Actually, Mrs.Ross stated this in class, that the only reason why she didn't have us read more was because of the graphic visual representation that we would have read in the following chapters.

  6. I agree with Nour, Mrs. Ross did say that as the story unfolds it would only get graphic, which in my opinion would be very difficult for me to finish the book.

  7. I believe it would get considerably more graphic as I've heard what we read was just a taste of what was to come. Seeing how The Jungle was more depressing than Grapes of Wrath, I think it would have ended on a horrible note to drive the nail in with the readers.

  8. Based on the first 12 chapters that I read, the overall mood of the book is cold and hopeless, I don't think the Jungle will end with a hopeful ending like the Grapes of Wrath.

  9. Yes, I think the story would become more graphical and depressing as it goes on. Since the first 12 chapters were kind of like a preview to the book, I don't believe that this book would end in a hopeful manner at all. You also have to take into account that this book is way darker than the Grapes of Wrath. Its primary focus was for readers to understand the harsh and disgusting working conditions of the meat packing industry. As a result, I think it would end in such a gruesome manner that the reader would be forced to reevaluate how people could go through with such things.
